It’s spring again! April showers have finally given way to May flowers and that means Mother’s Day is right around the corner. So this month our feature article is not going to focus on a particularly intriguing product or a uniquely traditional manufacturing process; instead it’s going to focus on a very special person: Mom.
Actually, this month’s feature is a little late because I’ve been up in Central New York, helping my 89 year-old Mom recover from a bad fall. Fortunately, she’s doing nicely and her stay in the hospital probably scared me more than it did her. But it drove home the fact that I’m only going to get one Mom. And so are you.
Yes, Moms are pretty special. And it doesn’t matter if you are seven or seventy. We all feel that way. If you don’t believe me, you should take a look at a Bing Crosby movie called GOING MY WAY. The film is almost old enough to be on Medicare, but it’s a favorite of mine and it won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1944, along with Oscars for director Leo McCarey and stars Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald.
In this admittedly maudlin film Bing Crosby plays the young Father Chuck O’Malley who is sent by his bishop to help the crotchety-but-loveable old Father Fitzgibbon (Barry Fitzgerald) keep his parish church from going bankrupt. As the plot develops, we learn that Father Fitzgibbon hasn’t seen his sainted mother since he left Ireland fifty years before to become a priest. So near the end of the film, Father O’Malley arranges to bring the ancient Mother Fitzgibbon over to America.

Okay, call me sentimental, call me a push-over, but every time I see that little old lady slowly totter down that church aisle toward her son and see Barry Fitzgerald suddenly realize who she is and tearfully reach out for her, I cry like a baby with a diaper rash. And I bet each and every member of the Academy did too. It wasn’t the tears of recognition in Barry Fitzgerald’s eyes that won him the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor; it was the tears in the eyes of those Academy members because each and every one of them knew what that old priest was feeling.
All of this is to say that our Moms are pretty special and that Mother’s Day is not just another greeting card holiday. It’s the one day of the year that we say, “Thanks, Mom, for putting up with the dirty diapers and sleepless nights, the dribbled oatmeal and sticky fingers, the grass-stained knees and tracked in dirt, the endless Little League games and Girl Scout meetings, the broken Barbie dolls and headless G.I. Joes, the Lego’s under foot and loud rumpus overhead, the skinned elbows and broken hearts, the sulks, the sighs, the teenage angst. Thanks for being comforter and cook, chauffer and chaperon, confidant and care giver.” It’s the one day we say, “Mom, you are someone special!”
