Home fragrances: converting a "house" into a "home"
What is the difference between a “house” and a “home”? A friend who had just started to study English asked me this question a couple of months ago. I tried to explain him that a “house” can be any house. A house is just a physical place in which to live with walls, a roof and rooms. It is not until you start living in it, not until you paint it, remodel it, buy your own furniture for it and put your own stamp on it… not until you create an atmosphere where you can relax and just be – that a “house” truly becomes a “home.” I recalled this conversation when we sat down to discuss this article. Why do we buy home fragrances and can a candle or a reed diffuser turn your “house” into your “home”?

Smell is one of the five senses that help you to interpret the outside world. A pleasant smell can calm you and help you to relax. An irritating smell can make you uncomfortable or even angry. People remember fragrances and they remember the circumstances in which they encounter them. When they want to remember that event, they smell the fragrance again and the fragrance helps them to vividly recall the details of that moment and even the emotions they felt at the time.

Does this mean that we may like some fragrances simply because they are associated with the special events in our lives? Perhaps. Perhaps we like certain fragrances because they remind us of people and places we’ve loved. There’s something truly comforting about that. A home is filled with memories and memories are filled with fragrance. So if we move to a new “house” it can become a “home” much faster if we bring our happiest memories with us. And a favorite fragrance may be one of the best ways to transport those memories.

So to answer the question, yes, we think that home fragrance can in fact help turn a “house” into a “home”.
